Quality #10: Ability to Inspire

    Quote from Forbes Article:

Creating a business often involves a bit of forecasting. Especially in the beginning stages of a startup, inspiring your team to see the vision of the successes to come is vital. Make your team feel invested in the accomplishments of the company. Whether everyone owns a piece of equity, or you operate on a bonus system, generating enthusiasm for the hard work you are all putting in is so important. Being able to inspire your team is great for focusing on the future goals, but it is also important for the current issues. When you are all mired deep in work, morale is low, and energy levels are fading, recognize that everyone needs a break now and then. Acknowledge the work that everyone has dedicated and commend the team on each of their efforts. It is your job to keep spirits up, and that begins with an appreciation for the hard work.

This, our final post on this subject of top 10 qualities that make a great leader, is where everything comes together. The ability to inspire people is not a single skill that you can work on, but it is a sum total of all the attributes that make you, well, YOU. The key phrase here is that it is your job to keep spirits up, and that begins with an appreciation for the hard work.

Remember that to be inspirational, you don’t have to have accomplished a monumental task or completed a herculean mission. You don’t have to be a sports hero, or a military hero, or a human-rights hero. There are everyday heroes among us, and they inspire people every day.

Someone who is inspirational to me in our event industry is Sooz Mirikitani of the Bayer Estate. Some of you may know her, or of her, and will know that she is the sweetest person you will ever meet. So often, when we go to events at the Bayer Estate she gives us drinks or sweets or lunch or ice cream, and makes sure that nobody says “no” just because they’re too shy to take it. She treats all her clients like they are the most important people in the world. She treats the people who help her take care of the property as if they were family (true enough, some of them are, but the ones who aren’t she still loves dearly). She LOVES animals and has had a dog most of the time I’ve known her. She takes such great joy in them as if they were her own children, and she cares for them and cries for them when they were old and in their last few days of life. She gives and gives and gives to those in need without ANY thought of reward. She pays attention to what people need, and does what she can to fill that need. She makes people’s dreams come true. Having a wedding venue like the Bayer Estate was a dream of hers many years ago, and now that it is reality, she truly cares for it like it is a precious gift to the world. But in reality, SHE is the precious gift to the world. I am a better person because I know her, and she inspires me to be kind, loving, and caring to the people I meet in life.

Develop some great characteristics that make others around you want to be like you. Be the type of person that is above reproach. Continue to do good things for the people around you: your community, your family and friends, and even complete strangers. Don’t seek the attention and praise that comes with those good deeds, but be willing to do them in secret, even without any thanks at all. Someone, somewhere will notice, and whether you know it or not, you will become one of their heroes. A great leader.
